BIOGRAPHY

Malin Hellkvist Sellén is a choreographer based in Stockholm, Sweden. She got her training at the University College of Dance in Stockholm 1998-2001 and has since her graduation worked on a freelance basis. Since 2000 she has created several dance pieces, for example Projekt - Genusneutral armé på uppdrag (Project Gender neutral Army on a Mission), Dom ger tanken kropp (They Give Thought Body), Kung Kristina (King Kristina) and Bättre folk (Better People).

Hellkvist Sellén's recurring themes are normativity and identity and a search for contexts in which movement is justified. Among her latest creations is ”Pink promises”, a solo for Marianne Kjaserund deriving from examinations on certain modes of social dancing and body politics. In 2010 Hellkvist opened ”Within reasonable limits”, a piece for six dancers raising questions about physical practice, representation, quality and more or less regular steps.

In addition to her own production Malin works with choreography in other constellations and settings. The latest commitments been as choreographic advisor to director Farnaz Arbabi who's play Queen Kristina premiered at Uppsala Stadsteater in September 2009. Recently she has also worked as a choreographer for the hockey musical Penalty Killers produced by Kulturverket in Umeå that was shown at Umeå Hockey arena in September 2009.
The choreographer frequently holds lectures and workshops and during spring 2009 she held a three week long workshop for actors at the Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts which focused on dance and staging a critical perspective.

In conjunction with the work different types of public events are initiated or arranged in full, examples being open rehearsals, talks, parties, lectures and workshops. In 2005 Malin Hellkvist Sellén and Minna Kiper arranged three days of performances, lectures and discussions under the name of the POLLY Festival.
